ISF Takes Leading Step Towards Renewable Energy with Gas Malaysia’s First Certified Biomethane Supply Agreement

ISF’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Toshio Fujimori (second from right) and Gas Malaysia Energy and Services Chief Executive Officer En. Mohamad Farid Ghazali (second from left), officially signed the GSA agreement. The moment was witnessed by ISF Chief Marketing Officer, Ms. Khoo Yoke Lian (far right), and Gas Malaysia Berhad Group President & Group Chief Executive Officer, En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap (far left).

ISF proudly announces a groundbreaking partnership with Gas Malaysia Energy and Services (GMES), a subsidiary of Gas Malaysia Berhad (Gas Malaysia). With the signing of a new Supplemental Gas Supply Agreement (GSA), ISF has become Gas Malaysia’s first customer to receive certified biomethane through the Natural Gas Distribution System (NGDS). This milestone highlights both companies’ dedication to a sustainable energy future within the industrial sector and supports ISF’s ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The biomethane provided to ISF by GMES is certified under the globally recognized International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS standard, ensuring its alignment with stringent sustainability and renewable energy standards. Derived from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), this biomethane exemplifies the power of a circular economy, turning waste into a renewable energy source that meets conventional natural gas standards.

Speaking at the official signing ceremony, Mr. Toshio Fujimori, Chief Executive Officer of ISF, expressed the importance of the alliance in creating lasting value for a sustainable future. “This partnership between GMES and ISF establishes a new benchmark for industry collaboration in driving sustainable growth. Our joint efforts are focused on creating value for a greener future and supporting Malaysia’s aspiration of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.” said Mr. Fujimori.

As part of The Nisshin OilliO Group, Ltd., ISF has long utilised natural gas as a core fuel source in its operations. The transition to ISCC-certified biomethane marks a significant advancement in ISF's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy. Certified biomethane produces lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to natural gas, reinforcing ISF’s commitment to sustainability. This shift further aligns ISF's sustainability goals with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which targets a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and the achievement of net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Chief Executive Officer of ISF, Mr. Toshio Fujimori and Chief Executive Officer of GMES, En. Mohamad Farid Ghazali formalised the Supplemental GSA as signatories, jointly witnessed by ISF’s Chief Marketing Officer, Ms. Khoo Yoke Lian and Gas Malaysia's President & Group Chief Executive Officer, En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap.

En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap, President & Group CEO of Gas Malaysia Berhad, emphasized the transformative impact of the agreement: “This business relationship represents a significant step towards advancing renewable energy adoption in industries traditionally dependent on fossil fuels. The biomethane generated through this initiative is sourced from POME, thereby contributing to a circular economy model. By treating waste into a viable energy source, we aim to address waste-related environmental challenges and facilitate the transition from conventional energy sources to greener alternatives, in alignment with the nation’s broader sustainability objectives.”

Since 2005, ISF has been a valued customer of GMES, and the GSA has further deepened the strong relationship between both organizations. This collaboration with GMES and Gas Malaysia Green Ventures Sdn Bhd (GMGV) highlights ISF’s commitment to sustainability and reinforces biomethane’s role in advancing Malaysia’s sustainability landscape.

ISF’s leadership in sustainable energy adoption demonstrates the specialty fats industry’s potential for positive environmental impact, setting a strong example for others in the sector. Together, ISF and Gas Malaysia are creating a path for a more sustainable future, meeting today’s energy needs while building a legacy of environmental responsibility.
